Artillery Park: Limbers

 

I've designed a limber capable of towing each of the two models of cannons made by Brickpanda. 

Here it is towing the smallest gun (which I like to think of as an eight pounder):


And here comes an identical limber attached to the biggest gun (maybe a twelve pounder):



The chest on the limber contains six rounds of ammunition for the gun.

Wearing distinctive fur hats called colbacks (which could be topped by tall red plumes), the Horse Artillery of the Imperial Guard would ride, ideally, black horses. Hat style and horse colour were symbols of the unit's elite status. The horse artillery was part of the Imperial Guard ever since the guard was formed in 1804 (and already part of Bonaparte's Consular Guard before that) whereas foot artillery companies were added later.  Usually, the artillerymen on horseback, armed with a short cavalry sabre and a pistol (or pistols) for self-defence, would follow their cannons. Artillery Park: Ammunition Wagons

  I've already shown an ammunition wagon in a previous post , but I've improved the model so here we go again. As their name indicates, ammunition wagons were used to transport ammunition for the artillery guns or even cartridges for the artillery or the infantry's rifles, or sometimes even used to transport paraphernalia, various tools or spare parts.  Although a gun could already fire a few rounds even if an ammunition wagon wasn't available yet (because with each gun was carried a small chest containing a small number of cannon balls), theoretically, several ammunition wagons would be assigned to a single gun on the battlefield and while the guns were being fired by the artillerymen, behind them a constant back and forth of ammunition wagons bringing rounds from the rear's depots would ensure that the cannons were fed as many rounds as were needed. Veteran Cannoneers of the Imperial Guard

  Modelled on veteran infantry units, the company of Veteran Cannoneers of the Imperial Guard existed between 1812 and 1814. Unlike their colleagues from the "regular" foot artillery of the Guard who wore shakos or later for the Old Guard bearskins, the veterans wore bicornes. A typical role for the veterans, deemed unfit to serve in front-line duty, would be to help in the rear by manning arsenals and artillery parks, guarding, maintaining or repairing artillery weapons and materiel (you can see here veterans handling a slink cart , for example). Although I've included here an artilleryman with a wooden peg and a crutch (and another one with an eye patch), veterans were different from invalids; the latter not able to serve anymore and being cared for by the state. But even among active-duty military personnel you would find soldiers missing a limb and still refusing to abandon front-line service, although they were mainly officers.
